4.6.15.1 PLPM Configuration
Figure 4-42 shows a model for two NIDs in a PLPM configuration. Two switches are connected
by a LAG that consists of two ports. The two-port LAG offers the Service Provider protection in
the event of a single link failure. In order to preserve this protection scheme and also offer
Performance Monitoring, two NIDs can be inserted (one on each port of the LAG) and
interconnected together via the MPP. This configuration allows the NIDs to be “in-line” with the
LAG and transparent to any LACP communications between the switches, while simultaneously
allowing them to generate and receive PM and management traffic, either from the User or
Network Ports or indirectly through the MPP.
Figure 4-42 Model for Two NIDs in a PLPM Configuration
NIDs in a PLPM configuration coordinate management, provisioning, and PM traffic generation
functions with one another through the PLPM Control Protocol (PLCP). PLCP is an active
protocol that makes use of the MPP connection between the PLPM partner NIDs. The messages
are transported by RDP over UDP over IP, which makes the protocol switchable and routable
over any network. This protocol was designed to be used with PLPM configurations whereby the
LAG is “dual-homed” to switches in geographically different locations.
When the NIDs are first put into PLPM Mode, the PLCP is used as a “handshaking” mechanism
between the two NIDs, which results in one of the NIDs being designated as the “Active Master”
and the other NID as the “Passive Master”. The Active Master is responsible for generating and
receiving PM Test Packets and calculating the test results, while the Passive Master is
responsible for forwarding PM Test Packets received to the Active Master for processing. Both
